Quixtar #1 in H&B
Wednesday, June 08, 2005
Just got my June issue of Internet Retailer, which includes an article about the Top 400 retailers on the Web.  Quixtar maintained its #1 ranking in online Health & Beauty sales and is #14 overall for Web-based sales.  It continues to blow my mind that I can work for a company near the top of the e-commerce world (in sales, which is the most important metric, after all) and have awareness of Quixtar remain so low.  I guess we remain one of the best-kept secrets on the Web.

Of course, Quixtar doesn't advertise much other than some stuff it does online with search engines.  Our "advertising budget" is paying IBOs bonuses based on the business volume they generate for Quixtar.  Personally, I think of IBOs as living, breathing, walking billboards that are much more targeted than traditional advertising.  Our products have unique stories that require more presentation than a page in a magazine could provide.  Plus, the company only pays for performance!  IBOs earn their Quixtar bonus when sales are generated.  Traditional advertisers pay to get their message out whether or not sales result.

Back to the Internet Retailer Top 400.  Our closest competition in Health & Beauty is Avon at #21, and then Drugstore.com at #28.  Also, Quixtar's ranking doesn't include sales at online Partner Stores resulting from Quixtar.  Last year, IBOs generated some $65 million at Partner Stores, a number that possibly would move Quixtar up the rankings a little if attributed directly to our business (after all, we DO pay bonus money on that volume!).

While Quixtar's riding high in the e-commerce rankings, Alticor's continuing to grow around the world.  And right here in West Michigan.  Yesterday demolition of an old furniture store was completed so construction on Alticor's new 24-story Marriott hotel downtown can begin. Alticor unveiled the project last year, but the visible work downtown is finally starting.

Another project from Rich DeVos' RDV Corp. will be reviewed by the Grand Rapids Planning Commission tomorrow.  This five-acre, 700,000-square-foot medical complex further adds to a growing health corridor downtown, joining Spectrum's Butterworth Hospital complex, the Van Andel Institute and numerous other facilities.  My wife works in the DeVos Hospital for Women and Children, another tangible example of how much Alticor and its founders have given to this community.  Also, every day I drive past the MVP Sports fitness center that RDV built, similar to the one in Orlando.  If I didn't get such an awesome deal to work out in Alticor's fitness center, I'd be checking out MVP for membership.

So, to sum up, Quixtar's still leading the H&B pack online.  Alticor's growing globally.  The community continues to see tangible benefits -- in terms of health care, entertainment options, tourism and tax dollars -- of the company's success.  Oh, and it's it's going to be 88 degrees F here today.  OK, can't claim that one, but it's good to know.
