A Tale of Two Dells
Friday, June 22, 2007

For the past several years most people here at Quixtar have been supplied with Dell computers. In my case, a laptop that docks into a work station. It's OK, I guess, but for the past several months my cursor has been doing funny things, especially when I'm using the laptop outside the work station. The cursor will just float over to one side and out of my control.  I can't tell you how frustrating it is!

Sometimes applying pressure on the casing just below the keyboard works; other times I need to right-click and then hit escape a couple times to somehow "release" the hold some mysterious force has on my cursor, allowing me to continue on with my work. I think the company works on a three-year rotating schedule for equipment replacement, so as it stands now I'm probably a year away from a new unit.  Uggh.

I am contemplating this dilemma at this moment because tomorrow I leave with my family for the Wisconsin Dells. I have never been there, although I've been told they are a fantastic natural wonder.  Of course, like many other natural wonders, man has decided to build many flashy man-made wonders nearby.  We will be staying in one of them: the Great Wolf Lodge -- a hotel attached to a huge indoor water park.  We've stayed at the GWL in Traverse City, Michigan, before.  The kids love it.

We will be staying in a huge suite with my wife's family -- her parents and her brother and his family -- which means there will be 13 of us together in that shared space. It should be a lot of fun.

Apparently Wisconsin Dells is the "Waterpark Capital of the World," according to a convention bureau website. Of course, there's so much more!  Haunted houses, a casino, go-carts, golf (regular and putt putt) and on and on.  It reminds me a little of Niagara Falls and its Clifton Hill area featuring Ripley's Believe it or Not and Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. Maybe those features will be at the Dells too!

Well, if I can possibly tear myself away from the Wisconsin Dells for a few moments with my Dell laptop, and if the cursor decides to cooperate with me long enough, I will try to post at least once in the upcoming week.  But, this is vacation so don't necessarily count on it.  Have a good week!

Escape the tourist trap in Wisconsin Dells and take a drive over to Dodgeville to see The House on the Rock. It's well worth the time. There used to be a circus museum in Baraboo that was worth the brief drive. Whatever you do, escape the tourist trap!

Alan Eggleston,

I will have to take you up on that.  Thanks for the advice too.

Thanks Alan. We ended up doing the (Original) Duck Tours of the Dells, which is the main attraction.  We also went to the Tommy Bartlett show, which is where they do all the water skiing tricks and more. I got out of the side trip to the "Gem Mine," but I did take some of the older kids to the "Wizard Quest."

.

Of course, the main attraction was the water park at Great Wolf Lodge, especially the Tornado ride.  We did that one over and over again, and the free fall (well, it seemed like a free fall) was scary every time.  I think I'm still a little waterlogged.

.

It was a fun trip. I would have liked to have seen the House on the Rock.  Oh well.  Maybe next time (if there IS a next time!)

Try disabling either the mouse joy stick (between the G and H keys) or the touchpad.  It is probably one of those which is causing unintentional contact as a result of wear and tear.  You an always just use a wireless mouse instead...assuming you don't already.  :)

Thanks Steve.  I don't have a wireless mouse ... I use the touchpad.  It also does it periodically when plugged into my desktop (when using my regular mouse).
