Social Media
Monday, October 29, 2007

A few weeks ago I created a Facebook profile as part of my research into social media and potential uses for this business. It was pretty simple and really only took a few minutes.  I immediately was part of the "Grand Rapids" network based on my residency, and invited a few Quixtar friends to by my Facebook friends.

I didn't do much with it after that, except that suddenly I was getting invites to be the friend of others I know. Now I'm at about 40 friends from a variety of backgrounds, including work, my church, my family, and old school contacts. It amazes me how rapidly the circles are expanding, because with each new "friend" I am exposed to all their friends, many of whom I already knew and became new friends for me too.

Social media is an online illustration of how a successful Quixtar business is built, since it relies upon you tapping into your own network and gaining access to ever-widening spirals of people, some of whom might share similar interests and desires. It's the "network marketing" element our our business.

I know that some don't like to refer to our business as network marketing, just like they oppose multilevel marketing or direct selling as labels for our business.  I think our business is a unique combination of all three.  You tap into networks to make direct sales that help achieve rewards through our tiered compensation plan. It's a beautiful plan, isn't it!

My wife started her own Facebook site last week. It's only a matter of time before she has more friends than I. The interesting thing is that my son Conner, who is 14, is probably my most active "friend" in Facebook, with my daughter and some other teens from my church also among the more active participants. Young people are super active in the social media and that has many implications for our business, including a strong familiarity and acceptance for the "networking" that is part of our business.

If for no other reason than to research the phenomenon, I encourage IBOs to create their own Facebook pages and discover the power (all over again) of networking!

Robin,

Hi, I'm not a Facebook member, but this seems to have real potential for our business, enabling us to get to know each other better and keep in touch in a personal manner.

That is how easy our Quixtar business can and should be if we could eliminate the negative stigmas of the past business model that are still attached.

I started a facebood page. What do you suggest for 'Employer'. Can we put Quixtar? Would that make it easier for others to find us.?

Never had something like this before. Looking for pointers!

Editor's Note:  I think it's fine to put Quixtar.  It does make it easier for others to find you if you use a common "search word" in that field. Also, you can add other employers as well so that you also find friends from those other employers (although, as you know, you are not an employee of Quixtar!!).   RL

Regarding Dwight's comment, does listing Quixtar as "employer" meet the rule requirements? I'm not as much concerned about the "employee" part as I am the "internet advertising" part.

Editor's Note: I'm not the rules expert, but I don't think factually stating something like that is a rules violation.  RL

I used my Personal Websites as a means to advertise.

Go to marketplace and add your Personal Website to the list.

My face book page is http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=554044482

P.S. Robin - I sent you a poke.

Robin,

The corp. really needs to get out some updated, clear, and sensible (!) guidelines about what IBOs can and cannot be done on the internet. Existing rules were very much based on the traditional "level playing field" approach the business is based on, but these days the internet *is* a level playing field. Anyone can put up a blog or facebook or mypage site in minutes. It's the "virtual" equivalent of chatting to someone at a party or in a line in the store. Now, I think it's fair to limit IBOs with rules such as no spamming, no direct google ads and such, but otherwise existing "real world" rules such as income claims etc should be enough. Sure, some monitoring might be needed, but heck, at least you *can* theoretically monitor it!

Imagine the possibilities, and army of IBOs reviewing their free Simply Nutrilite bars, with a link back to the simplynutrilite website (incl. their embedded IBO#!) or the gals talking about time defiance - and a link back to the qbeauty etc etc etc.

80% of Americans now use the 'net regularly. It's the future. Let's use it properly, now.
