It's been nearly two weeks with no words from me.  Sorry.  I really meant to write last week, but every spare minute seemed to get filled with preparation of reviews for staff or discussing objectives with staff.  Plus we're going through a small reorg here in Communications as we become "Marketing Services" division, which is exciting (but time consuming!)

Add into the mix a trip to Minneapolis to meet with a PR vendor, a meeting with a sponsorship vendor, and discussions with peers internally to talk about plans for 2008, and it's been a very busy time.

What it really comes down to is that this is the time of year where we look at the year that was and review performance, while we're simultaneously cementing plans for the year to come. All of this is exciting stuff (maybe not to you on the outside, for whom this sounds like alot of corporate blah blah blah), because it is about what we do, and how well we do it.

I'm in the communications business, and as you all have heard, this year there's going to be ALOT of communications. Yesterday afternoon I watched a couple hours' worth of ESPN2.  I'm not necessarily a huge Track & Field fan, but I knew that the Boston Indoor Games would be totally Nutrilite, since we're a sponsor.  The ads featuring pole vaulter Jenn Stuczynski were great (plus she won her event!) and seeing Nutrilite signs throughout the venue (alongside Reebok and Visa) was great exposure.

I missed early parts of the telecast because I also was watching Rich DeVos' Orlando Magic beat the Boston Celtics in a thrilling game.  Hedo Turkoglu took the winning three-pointer as time expired, capping an awesome game of division leaders. Of course, seeing "Amway Arena" on the floor as the players ran up and down the court was an added source of pride.

Signage in a couple arenas and a few ads here and there is only the beginning of brand exposure. I hope to be able to share a lot more in months to come. For now, I hope you're having a good winter season!

UPDATE:  Excellent story about Jenn Stuczinski and the Nutrilite sponsorship.

Robin,

No need to feel guilty.

I watched the end of the Magic game as well, it was VERY exciting. I was waiting for Hedo to do something with the ball, pass, drive... he mostly held onto it in 3 point territory, then nailed the 3 pointer.

I also enjoyed watching the Amway word go back and forth on the screen...back and forth...back and forth...oops, fell into a "cult trance" for a moment (as they say in the blog world LOL (Laugh Out Loud)).

I meant to watch the track meet and forgot about it (good to see Jenn won, also a good sign for the Olympics later this year), missed a chance to fall into a "nutrilite trance" as well. Oh well, I'll just stare at my Double X for 3 hours to make up for it.

Hopefully you realize I am kidding with the above "trance" statements, but there are others out there who would, in all seriousness, agree with the above statements.

On a more serious note, I also was able to blog while watching TV, there's a lot of "dead time", as you know. I don't know what your personal situation or capability to tie into this site from home is, but a laptop and wireless connection does wonders for productivity.

Of course, I consider blogging as much of a sport as it is a serious activity. As Mitt Romney said recently in response to a reporter's question regarding how tiring campaigning is, with the veral punches and counter punches, something close to, "Are you kidding, this is like playing sports, for old guys!"

After playing some hoops and touch football with some neighborhood youngsters over the weekend, my body is telling me which sports to do less of and which ones to do more of.

By the way, I ALWAYS play to win. Follow the rules, but play to win.

Tex,

You don't blog.  You comment on blogs.

EDITOR'S NOTE:  We don't know that, Rocket. Tex might have a blog about gardening or car collecting or about Dennis Kucinich for all we know! :-)    RL

rockette,

I use the term blog generically. I'll let others use the precise definitions. Actually, I do have my own blog, but it isn't available to people like you.

RL,

For the record, I enjoy gardening, although I don't visit many blogs about gardening, am not into car collecting, and do not appreciate the Dennis Kucinich crack. I am a strong,  life-long Conservative/Republican. Apologies accepted. :-) (returned insincere smiley face)

 .

Editor's Note:  Tex, you need to lighten up. I truly was joking and the smiley face was sincere. You see, sometimes I crack myself up. I even contemplated using a winky smiley face to indicate to you just how self-pleased I was with my wit!   ;-)   Now, I'm just sad, sad, sad.  :-(

.

If I offended, I truly do apologize. But, c'mon, gardening, car-collecting and Kucinich? That's not a slam, it's just making the point that when y'all are anonymous, there's no telling what you do in your spare time!  I could have added "foreign beer brewing," "red neck humor" or "The Die Hard movie franchise" to the list of possible blog topics you write about, because I have no idea how your personal tastes run.  I only picked Kucinich because he's out in left field. Plus, I didn't want to start a political argument.  Kucinich is no longer a true factor in the race for his party's nomination.  If I would have used McCain or Huckabee or Giuliani or Clinton or Obama or Edwards, I might have been accused of having a political preference (to which I usually reply, I'm not Republican or Democrat, I'm Canadian). -- RL

Probably an overreaction, but seeing me (even only my blog name) with Kucinich in the same sentence made my skin crawl, something a Canadian probably doesn't fully appreciate.

I took a shower, everything is okay now.

Okay, I really really don't want to start a political debate, but my wife recently tried out the Presidential Calculator that I wrote about at my blog and found out..rather surprisingly, that she should support Kucinich.

And she doesn't even believe in UFOs. ;P  (and you can be sure that THAT emoticon IS sincere.

We vote tommorow, Jan 30th due to Super Tuesday being on Mardi Gras.

But sadly ( ;D ) Kucinich won't be considered for our vote due to his recent drop-out.

Robin,

Not sure if you know this ... but most blogs allow a feature where you can send email to a specific address, and the server will post it as a blog entry when it gets the email.  This is great for folks on the road, that might be able to type in emails while on planes, and stuff - in other words - when you're not connected live to the Internet.

So, you type in the email, it sits in your outbox, the next time you connect to the internet, it zips over and becomes a blog entry.

Ask your tech guru for details.
