Still Tops in Online H&B Sales
Friday, May 16, 2008

The 2008 edition of Internet Retailer's "Top 500 Guide" just came out and Quixtar continues to be the online sales leader for the Health and Beauty category.  Web sales are reported at $861 million, giving us an estimated 35% share of the H&B business online.  There were 24 online retailers listed in our category with sales representing 4.8% of all retail sales.

Overall, Quixtar dipped a little to #26 overall, reflecting our flat year and others' continued growth.  Internet Retailer's ranking methodology involves contact with hundreds of online retailers and detailed surveys that need are filled out by company representatives. The magazine ranks based on sales figures provided by the companies and, where companies do not disclose, through analyst estimates.  Quixtar received an "excellent" ranking for web site performance metrics, including a decent webpage download response time plus 100% "site availability" (based on 3,360 tests).  Only five retailers ranked higher than Quixtar in overall sales received similar "excellent" ratings and only four could claim 100% availability.

The profile of Quixtar in the guide cites the web work of the past year with Avenue A / Razorfish, noting that "the home page now is more focused on the health and beauty products" and features bigger images and drop-down menus aiding the shopper's experience.

It's great to have a high ranking like this and I hope we're able to maintain that Health and Beauty leadership for years to come.  It's more important, however, that we're the leader in helping people make money with their own independent product marketing businesses, and that's where our efforts are truly focused.

And IBOs wonder why the Corp is heavily focusing on the Health and Beauty product lines in it's portfolio.

It's where the money is!

That's Great News! Does that make it 5 years in a row Quixtar is on top in the H&B categories? With the new products that continue to roll out I'm pretty confident that #1 spot is ours for many years to come.

I agree that helping people make money sooner should be our top focus, but for a new IBO to share this stat with potential IBOs or clients will only boost their confidence and give them instant credibilty.

Awesome!

35% of the market is pretty impressive! Is Internet Retailers "Top 500 List" of companies in North America only? What do you think will happen to that number when the transition to Amway Global is complete?

.

EDITOR'S NOTE:  This is list of top American companies based on Web sales. The Amway Global transition shouldn't matter, because we'd still only count domestic sales.  -- RL

Robin, since you now have management responsibilities in "customer facing" advertising and applications, would it be possible to track down an answer for this question:

When will the Quixtar site be optimised for accessing via Safari web browser, and when might it be optimised for access via an iPhone, particularly the G3 compatible "iPhone 2.0" rumoured to be released at the Apple Developers' Conference in mid-June?

.

EDITOR'S NOTE:  I may have management responsibilities to deliver advertising, sponsorship and PR programs that deliver on Marketing objectives, but IT is still responsible for executing against corporate objectives for our web sites. That would be a good question for the Code Review guys.  -- RL

I believe we are at a crossroads and are poised to leap ahead of the competition. Our sales will be better than ever because of all the new products, Amway Global's increased emphasis on retailable products, QU, and free shipping to our clients. That will mean IBO's are making more money sooner, and the retention rate will sky rocket!

It just dawned on me that one thing Q/AG is totally missing the boat on, especially as the #1 online retailer for health/beauty is the following:

Artistry is pretty much marketed as a women's line and Tolsom for men.  Artistry is used (but maybe not admitted as so) by LOTS of IBO men.  Women are way more willing to invest significant money into their skin care than men, yet the Tolsom line is both more expensive and less profitable than Artistry. It's one of the very last lines a "Core" IBO will start buying.

Imagine the surge of business if Artistry were to re-package some products for men, keeping the amazing PV/retail profit, and dump the Tolsom line altogether.

Anyone agree with me?  Robin - could you let the Who's Who in Q/AG product development in on this?

P.s. I think "Artisan" would be pretty "manly" name for that line!

Dan Kalis,

I agree, I do use Artistry myself along witht the Tolsom line. I think many men would use something along the lines that you describe. Amway Global is becoming more innovative so I hope your suggestion reaches some ears that can make the difference.

Perhaps you could also send your suggestion to Susan at Sales Speak. She just had a post asking for new ideas.
